Saline, sandy flat, near sea level. Dense desertscrub.
Very common, cholla ca. 1.5 m tall. Fruit and stems green, fruit pendulent in chains. Cactus bees visiting flowers, larger ones about size of honey bee but body thinner and with gray banded abdomen. Dark colored ants feeding on nectaries attacked pruning shears - stinging and biting. Stigma and anthers white; petaloids, filaments, and style deep pink purple; style thick; stamens sensitive. Flowers 3.9-4.4 cm wide (fully open).
