USA, Arizona, Maricopa, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1995 0210 0101; originally received as a plant collected by Marc Baker 11289, 7 February 1994, from Arizona, Pima County, 2 km west of Big Wash, altitude 2860 feet; 35 deg N, 05 deg 22' E; SE1/4, SW 1/4, Section 25, T11S, R13E; collector's note; habitat dissected lower bajada with Larrea tridentata, Calliandra eriophylla, Cercidium microphyllum, Encelia farinosa, Ferocactus wislizeni, Lycium andersonnii, Lycium fremontii, Opuntia fulgida, Opuntia fulgida x leptocaulis, Opuntia versicolor, Opuntia spinosior x versicolor, Opuntia spinosior, Opuntia leptocaulis, Opuntia engelmannii, Opuntia phaeacantha, Prosopis velutina, plus many other plants.

Flower diameter 31-40 mm, length 30-35 mm, outer perianth cream with reddish-brown midstripe, inner perianth cream with pale reddish-brown midstripe; stigma lobe number 5-6, cream; joints/stems reddish-brown or gray (from sun damage) or plum, main joints long and thin with short side joints; older spines gray with dark tips, 4 per aerole; new spines reddish-brown, 1 per aerole; aeroles tuberculate; fruit diameter 13-15 mm, length 18-25 mm, reddish-orange; seeds tan; thigmotrophic positive.
